The Undergraduate Certificate of Criminal Justice and Criminology is a pathway qualification into working in the field of law. Ideal for those considering a career in criminal law, this course provides an introduction to fundamental concepts of criminology. In this short, four-unit course, students will develop an understanding of the major theoretical models of crime and the construction of the Australian legal system. They will also learn about the procedures the legal system uses to respond to criminal offences.

This undergraduate certificate is composed of four units, typically requiring six months full-time study to complete.

Students who complete this undergraduate certificate and meet the minimum grade requirement will gain entry into the Bachelor of Laws. Completed units will be credited to the Bachelor of Laws or an alternate degree if preferred.

Entry requirements

Students must meet any of the below criteria in order to enter this course:

  • Hold a Year 12 certificate of completion (Minimum ATAR requirements may apply.); or
  • Completion of a Cert IV or partial completion of a Diploma or above in any field; or
  • Can demonstrate relevant work experience and meet the language, literacy and numeracy requirements to study at the diploma level.

This course is not available to international students.

Bachelor of Laws

Students who complete all four units of the Undergraduate Certificate of Criminal Justice and Criminology with a 60% average mark are eligible to enrol in the Bachelor of Laws. All four units will be credited to the Bachelor of Laws. This pathway is open to all students who meet the entry criteria.

The estimated fee for this course is $8,496*.

Commonwealth provided loans are available to assist eligible students to pay their course fees and there are a range of university, government and privately funded scholarships and prizes.

Course fees may change without notice and will be affected by a student’s unit selection and any credit awarded in recognition of previous academic experience.

This course is not available to international students.

Domestic students also contribute to student services and amenities via an annual fee.

Scholarships are available for both commencing and current students. You may be eligible for Swinburne Scholarships.

We offer either HECS-HELP or FEE-HELP to Australian citizens and permanent humanitarian visa-holders for all of our university courses. For undergraduate degrees, Commonwealth Supported Places (CSP) are available for all students who meet the entry criteria. HECS-HELP is available for Australian citizens and permanent humanitarian visa-holders as part of their CSP offer. New Zealand citizens and Australian permanent residents will need to pay their unit fees up front, but will be eligible for our domestic student fee. For postgraduate courses, Australian citizens and Permanent Humanitarian visa-holders that are eligible for courses, will be able to use FEE-HELP to pay their tuition fees. International students are not eligible for any Australian government fee assistance.
