Exams

Exams are included in many Swinburne Online units as a compulsory part of assessment. This page provides general information, and answers some frequently asked questions about the exam process.

Important information about exams

  • All exams (except online exams) are held face-to-face at central locations in capital cities or major regional centres.
  • You will be required to present photo ID (e.g. licence) in order to sit your exam.
  • Food is not permitted in examinations, except in cases of approved medical arrangements. Water bottles are permitted for all candidates.
  • Travel/holiday commitments are not acceptable reasons for missing exams.
  • Examinations will be scheduled on a specific day; the examination date cannot be altered, due to the confidentiality of the examination papers.
  • All exam communications will be sent to your student email address, including your personalised exam timetable.
  • If you have unavoidable circumstances beyond your control that prevent you sitting your exam, you can apply to defer your exam, known as special consideration.

Metropolitan exam locations

Exams are held in Australian capital cities or regional centres based on the number of candidates in that location. Venues within these cities will be selected based on their central location and proximity to public transport. Some capital cities may not be established as examination centres due to low candidate numbers.

Online examinations

Students who cannot attend a metropolitan exam venue due to distance, work commitments or medical reasons that have been registered via an Equitable Assessment Arrangement (EAA) will be automatically allocated to sit their exams via the online exam option. The examinations can be held at home, using a personal computer, with a supervisor monitoring the exam via webcam. If a student within 100km of a venue registers to sit an exam online, supporting documentation may be requested.

For anyone who cannot meet the technical requirements of the online exams, there is the option to opt-out of the online exams and a venue in the local region will be booked by the exams team. Information about opting out of the online exams option will be included in the email sent to student accounts in Week 7.

Some exceptions to the above attendance options may apply for students on deployment with the Defence Forces or for students with mobility medical conditions. More information will be included in the email sent to student accounts in Week 7.
